Application Procedure

#1 Complete the D.O. Ph.D. Program Application Form

#2 Attach a Curriculum Vitae with a list of abstracts or publications

#3 Include a photocopy of your MSU COM Application

#4 - Complete the Application to The Graduate School - after interviews with the Director of the D.O. Ph.D. Program and the graduate program director in the major field. Send the application with the application fee to Dr. Veronica M. Maher, Director of D.O. Ph.D. Program and include a Statement of Purpose on a separate sheet of paper

Verify: Official transcripts (from all institutions) have been sent to the Office of Admissions for Graduate School admission and to the Office of Admissions in the College of Osteopathic Medicine for Medical School admission.

Three Letters of Recommendation should be sent to the Director of the D.O. Ph.D. Program regarding your qualifications for the Ph.D. Program. Confer with the D.O. Ph.D. Program Director, Dr. Veronica M. Maher, on all the items listed above. Materials are submitted to:

Candidates for the D.O. Ph.D. Program must apply for admission and be accepted by both the Graduate School and the College of Osteopathic Medicine. Two applications with two separate fees for are required: Application for Admission to Graduate Study and Graduate Professional Application for Admission.

MSTP Candiate Selection Criteria

Prospective D.O. Ph.D. Program candidates are sought nationally as well as in-State. Special effort is directed toward the recruitment of women and ethnic minorities. Qualified students interested in a career in medical and basic science research should contact the D.O. Ph.D. Program office as early as possible. From among the prospects who express an interest in dual D.O. Ph.D. study, a group is selected for encouragement and consideration
  • Evidence of strong motivation and solid educational participation in research projects and/or Authorship on a research publication/abstract.
  • Evidence of aptitude for experimental research as indicated by experience in a research laboratory
  • A written statement of career goals.
  • Letters of recommendation from faculty who can attest to motivation and ability to carry out research.
  • Superior academic performance in such basic science courses as biology, biochemistry, mathematics, microbiology, physics, chemistry, engineering, genetics, and molecular and cell biology.
  • High scores in admissions tests----Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) & Graduate Record Exam (GRE)
